This thesis delves into the cultural identity and tourism industry of Cyprus, a small island with a unique blend of history, politics, and natural beauty. My personal experiences traveling in Cyprus, exploring its historical landmarks, and engaging with local traditions inspired me to investigate the complexities of its tourism sector. Situated at the intersection of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Cyprus has a rich historical legacy that spans thousands of years, from the Greeks and Romans to the Ottomans and British. This legacy has shaped a vibrant cultural landscape characterized by a blend of historical sites, distinctive cuisine, and diverse traditions.Modern-day Cyprus presents a unique study of cultural identity and tourism due to its geopolitical division into the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus in the south and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. Despite the island's rich history and scenic beauty, its tourism industry faces challenges due to political divisions, seasonality, and environmental concerns. In the south, advanced tourism infrastructure has helped establish a thriving industry that caters to millions of visitors seeking luxury accommodations, cultural festivals, and ancient archaeological sites. In the north, tourism infrastructure remains limited due to international isolation, yet it offers distinctive cultural heritage and natural landscapes. The research explores how the tourism industry in Cyprus has evolved beyond traditional sun-and-sea holidays to incorporate cultural, agro-, and eco-tourism practices that appeal to a diverse range of travelers. Through a comprehensive literature review, the thesis contextualizes the current trends within the broader scholarly discourse on tourism, sustainability, and cultural heritage management. Key areas of focus include the economic impact of tourism, the role of government and local organizations in preserving cultural heritage, and the strategies for promoting sustainable tourism.Qualitative interviews with local tourism professionals offer invaluable insights into the island's tourism dynamics, challenges, and opportunities. These interviews highlight how tourism intersects with Cyprus's economic growth, cultural exchange, and national identity. Participants note the growing importance of sustainability and heritage preservation, acknowledging the challenges posed by seasonality, political tensions, and environmental degradation. Efforts to promote sustainable tourism include integrating traditional cultural experiences with modern hospitality services, supporting rural tourism initiatives, and encouraging eco-friendly practices among hoteliers. In both the north and south, tourism has become a cornerstone of the economy, providing substantial revenue, supporting local businesses, and generating employment. However, balancing economic development with environmental and cultural preservation requires strategic planning and collaboration between the public and private sectors. The study reveals that successful tourism development depends on understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by both regions. This includes creating tailored marketing strategies that promote distinctive cultural attractions, improving infrastructure, and fostering cross-community collaborations.Ultimately, the thesis seeks to contribute to the broader understanding of sustainable tourism practices and cultural heritage management in politically divided societies. It demonstrates that Cyprus's tourism industry can thrive through strategic approaches that prioritize cultural preservation, sustainability, and inclusive economic growth. By combining personal travel experiences with scholarly research and professional insights, this study provides a nuanced exploration of Cyprus's tourism landscape and highlights strategies that balance economic vitality with preserving the island’s rich cultural legacy.
