Absztrakt (kivonat)

Ghana formerly known as Gold Coast, has gained significant economic growth since independence in 1957, yet certain hemisphere of the country continues to experience disproportionately extreme poverty rates. This study examines persistent poverty in Ghana's Northern regions through a comparative analysis of pre-colonial and post-colonial determinants using mixed-methods secondary data analysis. This study was conducted to take a deep look at the several points and factors that contribute to the causes of poverty in the Northern region. The factors that was taking into account are environmental factors, structural factors, social factors, economic factors, cultural factors, institutional factors and human capital. This data was gathered from a wide range of sources including reports from well trusted institutions like Ghana Statistical Service, the World Bank, research papers and reports from other people. The principal findings indicate that the prevailing patterns can be attributed to both structural constraints and residual impacts of colonialism. Data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census showed that about a total of 24.3 percent which represents 7.3 million of the population are multidimensionally poor(Ghana News Agency, 2024). The same study make it clear that colonial investment patterns from the Britishers created a path dependency that disadvantaged the North most. The Northern region is still left behind with 51 percent less developed compared to the Southern region(Iddrisu Kambala, 2022).When you take a closer look into the underinvestment in infrastructure and services during the colonial period effectively disadvantaged the North, which was used as a labor reserve during that period. Despite several continued development measures post-independence, all these administrations failed woefully in addressing this issue. This study uncovers the intricate web of relationships between factors that contribute to the persistence of poverty in this region. To reduce poverty in a sustainable way, policymakers need to take a holistic approach, taking into account both the economic and structural factors at play. This means coordinating efforts to build better infrastructure, improve education, empower people, and strengthen institutions.
