The automotive industry has served as one of the most critical pillars of the Hungarian economy since the transition, shaping the industrial structure, export-import balance and performance and integration into global value chains. Over the past three decades, Hungary became transformed into a strategic hub for German automotive OEMs, whose investments reshaped the country’s economic landscape to a major manufacturing hub through employment creation, technological transfer and deepening Hungary’s role in European production networks through FDI. As a result, German automotive capital evolved into a principal element of Hungary’s dependent yet dynamically evolving economic model. However, the automotive industry is now undergoing significant transformation driven by tightening EU regulations, electrification and shifting patterns of global competition. These transitions attracted the attention of a new wave of foreign investors, most notably Asian automotive firms, including Korean and Japanese component producers and since the 2020s a Chinese automotive brand, BYD. Their potential rapid expansion reflects broader structural shifts in the global automotive sector, especially the competitive advantage of Asian companies in electric mobility, battery and software technology and competitive pricing. As these actors will expand their presence in Hungary, they will reshape the competition field and balance between established German manufacturers and new Asian entrants, raising questions about Hungary’s future role in global value chains.Simultaneously, the European Union heightens the pressure on green transitioning and electrification through emission regulations and action plans to further accelerate the transformation of production, technological advancements and supply chains towards a more modern and environmentally sustainable future. These regulations and policies aim to reinforce Europe’s industrial competitiveness and safeguard its strategic autonomy, yet they also impose a significant threat on local automotive OEMs. German manufacturers possess less experience in electric vehicle manufacturing compared to technologically advanced and cost competitive Asian brands. Thus, German vehicle producers face a dual challenge of meeting EU’s regulatory demands while defending their market share. For Hungary, whose automotive sector relies significantly on foreign capital, these advancements generate both opportunities and vulnerabilities. In this context, examining German capitals history and the newly entering Asian automotive firms potential is essential for understanding the country’s current and future industrial trajectory. The shift from producing conventional internal combustion engines and vehicles to completely electric engines and vehicles requires substantial resource realignment in production capacities, supplier networks and technological capabilities. The entry of Asian parties intensifies competition but also diversifies Hungary’s FDI portfolio, disrupting well established dependencies meanwhile deepening new ones. The purpose of this research is to analyse how German and Asian automotive companies’ investments shaped and continue to influence Hungary’s automotive sector through identifying driving factors such as EU regulations, electrification, technological advancements and government support that changes the competitive landscape. The research utilises a mix of research methodologies: collecting and analysing secondary data from reliable sources and through in depth-interviews with professionals in the sector to draw a well-examined conclusion.
