Absztrakt (kivonat)

The liberation of occupied lands carried out by Azerbaijan in the year 2020 significantly altered the geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus because nearly thirty years of occupational control by Armenia have led to an acute military operation by Azerbaijan to reclaim its territorial integrity. In the operation that commenced on September 27, 2020, about 6,400 casualties were reported and Armenian settlers who migrated to occupied territories were also displaced, reestablishing the sovereignty of Azerbaijan of lands occupied since 1991- 1993, contrary to the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 822, 853, 874, and 884 (Ghazaryan et al., 2023). Although the active hostilities were ceased due to the Russian- mediated ceasefire of November 10, 2020, a complex new stage of the peace process started with the conflicting international mediators and considerable power asymmetry between the sides. This thesis examines American mediation, limitations, and intervention in Azerbaijan- Armenia peace negotiations which have been going on since the liberation of Azerbaijan territory and specifically the role played by the Trump administration that resulted in the historic Washington Declaration on August 8, 2025.
