Absztrakt (kivonat)

This subject is one the author finds crucial to examine, and take note of, as it serves as a prime example of modern conflict in which one side takes the form of a global superpower. Even with the supposed discrepancies in power, the outcome is not always obvious. 1. Questions examined in the paper: a. Was the decision to invade Afghanistan warranted? b. What objectives did America have going into the war? c. Why did the plan come to failure? d. What can other nations and governments learn from these events? 2. Research methodology used in the paper: a. The paper’s research philosophy mostly aligns with interpretivism, with the author actively participating in the research process. The approach of the research is deductive, as the conclusion of the events are already visible to us, but how we got to this conclusion is not straightforward. This research paper is qualitative, examining data with narratives, but will contain quantitative elements, without compromising on the original premise. The data for the paper is split between primary and secondary data, as an interview was carried out with an expert of modern geopolitics, Attila Demkó. 3. Short presentation of the results: a. Difficulties rose when US forces turned to associate themselves with local warlords in order to carry out their objective of rebuilding and counterterrorism, of which the latter very often came with huge civilian death tolls. The national disturbance this caused prompted the Taliban to strike back and rapidly take control back firstly over rural areas, but eventually almost the whole country. The continuous strain the war put on america lead them to eventually reach a peace treaty with the Taliban, and the american response that followed was to withdraw the troops and cut military assistance provided to afghan national forces, who without help were unable to maintain any position of power in their own country. When choosing the massive task of reconstruction and pacification of Afghanistan, America „bit off more than it could chew”, and ended in a position arguably worse than what it started with, even though the Taliban pledged not to allow any terrorist organization to operate in areas they control.
