Digital media platforms have fundamentally transformed the processes of information creation, distribution, and consumption. In the contemporary era, the platform economy has emerged as a dominant paradigm. Unlike traditional capitalist models, the central value within this system lies in the capture and retention of user attention, which has become an increasingly valuable commodity. As early as 1971, Herbert Simon recognized that in an environment characterized by an abundance of information, human attention becomes a scarce resource. This insight laid the groundwork for what is now widely referred to as the Attention Economy.Within this framework, digital enterprises generate revenue by maximizing user engagement and effectively monetizing the time individuals spend on their platforms. TikTok serves as a prominent example in this context. Developed by ByteDance and launched internationally in 2017 (following its initial release as Douyin in China in 2016), TikTok epitomizes the dynamics of the attention economy. Its success extends beyond the appeal of short-form videocontent; it is largely attributable to sophisticated algorithmic recommendations and a user interface meticulously designed to sustain prolonged user engagement. With a global user base exceeding one billion active individuals, TikTok’s rapid ascent underscores the profound influence digital platforms now exert over cultural, societal, and economic domains.
