Absztrakt (kivonat)

Privatization in the Balkans during the 1990s unfolded in the chaos of the socialist collapse, the breakup of Yugoslavia, and shifting political systems. Governments rushed to transform huge state-owned enterprises into private hands, often through voucher schemes or insider deals that favored politically connected groups. Many factories collapsed due to war, sanctions, and loss of markets, while new owners frequently focused on asset stripping rather than modernization. In retrospect, the process promised a competitive market economy but delivered uneven outcomes: some industries revived with foreign investment, yet many regions still struggle with unemployment, deindustrialization, and distrust in institutions. Today, privatization is viewed as both a necessary transition and a cautionary tale of how weak oversight, corruption, and instability can shape economic reform for decades.
