Absztrakt (kivonat)

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services are becoming increasingly common among university students, mainly because they appear simple, convenient, and cost-free. However, while BNPL offers immediate purchasing power, many young users may not fully understand the potential financial risks behind it. This study aims to explore how financial literacy is associated with students’ BNPL usage behavior and their awareness of debt-related risks. To collect data, an online questionnaire was distributed to students from different academic backgrounds, focusing on their BNPL usage patterns, basic financial knowledge, risk perception, and financial situation. A quantitative approach was used to analyze trends and compare differences between groups. The findings suggest that although many students use BNPL for convenience or to reduce short-term financial pressure, their understanding of associated fees and long-term consequences is often limited. Students with stronger financial literacy tend to recognize possible risks more clearly and show more cautious attitudes toward BNPL. In contrast, students with weaker financial knowledge are more likely to underestimate risks and rely more heavily on installment payments. These results highlight an important gap between BNPL’s popularity and students’ ability to use it responsibly. The study suggests that improving financial education may help young consumers make more informed decisions and avoid unnecessary financial stress.
