Absztrakt (kivonat)

Budapest’s workplaces are becoming more culturally diverse, yet there is little research on how managers use cultural awareness to help their teams. That’s why my thesis investigated how leaders who understand cultural differences can improve teamwork and team development in Budapest’s multicultural workplaces. I used intercultural competence theories, cultural intelligence (CQ) and frameworks such as Hofstede, Trompenaars, and Hall to study how leaders notice and manage cultural differences within their teams.I conducted interviews with eight CEOs, HR managers, and project leaders from sectors including human resources, consulting, technology, and hospitality. These leaders operate in multicultural workplaces in Budapest. The interviews revealed how intercultural awareness appears in daily leadership practices and contributes to stronger teamwork and team development. Participants included both Hungarian and foreign-born leaders managing teams of five to twenty people from two to ten nationalities.Findings show that leader’s intercultural awareness is not just a soft skill but a strategic competence that transforms leadership from task management to really understanding people. Leaders who recognize and respect cultural differences foster better communication by building trust and encouraging shared learning in their teams. The positive effects are more pronounced in highly diverse teams and are supported by practices such as inclusive feedback, coaching and scheduling that support cultural needs.Additionally, the findings suggest that a hybrid leadership style, combining clear hierarchy with empathy and flexibility, emerged as a characteristic of successful leaders in Budapest. The study highlights practical implications for leadership and HR development, particularly the need for structured intercultural awareness training. It is important to note that these findings are constrained by the limited number of participants and the focus on a single regional context.
