Absztrakt (kivonat)

This thesis explores the application of gamification in enhancing the tourist experience through interactive, cultural walking tours in Almaty, Kazakhstan, a city rich in heritage but currently lacking digital SMART tourism tools that promote active engagement with its lesser-known landmarks. The research aims to design and assess a gamified walking tour prototype that elevates tourist satisfaction and enriches exploration through storytelling and interactivity. To contextualize the study, a comparative analysis was conducted of three leading gamified tour platforms: Questo, Secret City Trails, and Let’s Roam, highlighting best practices, technological limitations, and critical user feedback. These findings, such as the importance of intuitive navigation, meaningful storytelling, balanced challenge levels, and visual appeal, helped shape the conceptual structure and mechanics of the prototype quest tailored to Almaty’s urban and cultural landscape. Insights were gathered from three distinct focus groups representing different age ranges (teenagers, young adults, and older participants). Participants emphasized the need for clear instructions, non-linear routes, flexible pacing, and culturally rich, locally grounded content. This feedback directly influenced design choices such as including Almaty-specific narratives, varied puzzle types, rest points, and accessible mobile navigation.Lastly, the thesis offers a practical guide for aspiring developers who seek to create their cultural quests. This guide synthesizes lessons learned from both comparative and field research, offering a framework rooted in storytelling, accessibility, ethical design, and stakeholder collaboration.
