Absztrakt (kivonat)

This thesis examines the connection between consumer attitudes and the hotel industry's willingness to adopt sustainable waste management initiatives concerning the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework. The study uncovers a shift in customer attitudes toward sustainability preferences through a dual approach combining an interview with an industry expert, Barnabás Kövesdi, and a questionnaire made for the hotel guests. The finding indicates that while guests do express a desire for more sustainable approaches, the awareness of the ESG framework is still low, which presents a challenge in the implementation. Other challenges were uncovered through the literature review, like significant upfront costs and the complexity of regulatory pressures. These issues, combined with a lack of awareness and training in the industry, can hinder hotels to sustainable practices. Identifying key challenges, the industry is facing leads to coming up with solutions for the problems. The study concludes that, however, every hotel has a different set of challenges and coming up with solutions has to be tailored down to each of these needs. There is an urgent need to simplify the ESG framework to include the tools to reach its goals. In this way, ESG will not only align with the industry goals but also actively keep in mind the customer demand for a sustainable hotel industry. Bridging this gap between regulatory compliance and customer demands, this thesis reinforces the potential of the hotel industry to transition towards sustainability while actively contributing to a healthier environment and society.
