AbstractSince the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire deal, the Zangezur Corridor has become one of the South Caucasus region's most strategically important projects. By promoting trade, logistics as well as energy transit, this proposed transportation and connectivity route, which would connect mainland Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan via southern Armenia-is anticipated to change the dynamics of the regional economy. The corridor might provide other and quicker routes connecting Central Asia to Europe, which would be beneficial not only for Azerbaijan and Turkey but also for further Eurasian integration. The Zangezur Corridor has the potential to be an essential part of the contemporary Silk Road, strengthening economic cooperation and stability in an area characterized by historical tensions and geopolitical competition. There are several advantages to the corridor from an economic standpoint. It may greatly cut down on the time and expense of transportation, make it easier to move goods and services, and help diversify trade and energy lines. For Azerbaijan, it serves as a direct land connection to both its strategic and economic partner, Turkey, and its western provinces. The corridor can function as a new route for east-west transit for Turkey and other regional players like Georgia, Kazakhstan, and even China, particularly if it is in line with initiatives like China's Belt and Road Initiative or the Middle Corridor. Additionally, the construction of this corridor may encourage investment in logistics hubs, infrastructure, and other industries, so promoting long-term regional employment and economic growth. However, there are a lot of obstacles in the way of the Zangezur Corridor's execution, even with its bright future. The main barrier is the continuous political hostility between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Disagreements over ownership and management of the corridor continue to impede development, despite the ceasefire agreement's provisions for unblocking regional transport linkages. Azerbaijan stresses the need for continuous access, while Armenia has voicedconcerns about territorial integrity. The impasse caused by these opposing viewpoints hinders efficient planning and building. The participation of external geopolitical powers like Russia, Iran, and the European Union adds even more complexity to the already existing bilateral issues. Each of these powers approaches the corridor differently and has its own strategic objectives in the area. Although it wants to sustain influence over both Armenia and Azerbaijan, Russia backs the corridor under its peacekeeping mission. Iran, meanwhile, has opposed the project because it believes it will cut off its access to important trade routes and reduce its power in the South Caucasus. Although it has little direct control on regional results, the European Union continues to provide cautious support, especially in the areas of connectivity and energy security. There are still financial and infrastructure issues. It takes a lot of money and organization to build dependable railroads, roads, and customs facilities over politically delicate and hilly territory. Logistics planning is made more difficult by security considerations, especially those pertaining to the safety of transit through Armenian territory. The corridor runs the risk of turning into a politically symbolic endeavor rather than a fully operational commercial channel in the absence of international guarantees and mutual trust. This essay aims to present a thorough examination of the Zangezur Corridor's economic potential as well as to identify the primary obstacles that can postpone or impede its effective execution. Although the corridor offers a rare chance for regional growth and economic integration, its future is largely dependent on regional collaboration, diplomatic advancements, and a common goal of connectedness in the South Caucasus. Policymakers, investors, and academics interested in the geopolitical and economic development of this strategically significant region must comprehend these processes.
