Absztrakt (kivonat)

The overall objective of this study is to examine how the scholarship programme Stipendium Hungaricum has contributed to the developments of soft power of Hungary. To do so, the study is guided by the following research questions and objectives: the extent to which SH serves Hungary’s foreign policy goals, including its Eastern Opening policy whether and how SH students and alumni perceive Hungary culturally, politically, and diplomatically if and how SH alumni interact with Hungary after the program what lessons can be drawn from equivalent international scholarship programs recommendations on how to improve SH as an instrument of soft power. These lead to the following research questions: Main Research Question: • In what ways the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program strengthens the soft power of Hungary? Sub-questions: 1. What are the political reasons behind Hungary’s investment in SH? 2. How does the program influence or contribute to awareness of Hungary abroad? 3. What are the positions of SH graduates in cultural diplomacy, policy-making and international cooperation? 4. What can we conclude comparing outcomes and strategic alignment between the SH programme and similar programmes such as Chevening and Erasmus+? 5. What adaptations would allow SH to become more effective and have a wider reach?
