Absztrakt (kivonat)
In many ways, the 21st century is the age of possibilities. In the last close to two decades, humanity have made leaps in technological advancements, and sociological changes were not far behind. From the interconnected world of social media, to one’s ability to look up almost anything on the fly by using a palm-sized device is nothing short of extraordinary. As we look forward and into the future, the word “impossible” almost loses its meaning, as we, humanity, have proven ourselves capable to exceeding our own expectations, as well as giving birth to ideas and solutions once thought – in the recent past – impossible. As we celebrate our ability to dream and create, we also look to the gifted for whom are leading the charge on the forefront of innovation for both inspiration and motivation. The 20th century saw the rise of Gates, Jobs and Wozniak as they changed the world we live in, but such visionaries were few and far between. In our current day and age, a new genius is celebrated on a monthly basis for once again changing our lives, forever. That is not to say that there is an abundance of people redefining the world, but that there are more of these exceptional individuals in the limelight than ever before. Not only do we actively celebrate genius, however, but we also stride to foster it to the best of our abilities and resources. Be it in the way of education, or already established people of above average cognitive powers reaching out and searching for prodigies, being a high IQ individual today is certainly better than it was yesterday, yet not as great as it will be tomorrow. An ever so important aspect of our constantly evolving life is the media and how it affects, shapes or forms our lives. In this paper, I attempt to reconcile the worlds of modern media and people with extraordinary cognitive abilities in order to shed light on how far we have come and what we have to look forward to going into the future. Themes of social acceptance, education and public perception all play outstandingly important roles in our lives, and the importance of those aspects shall be reflected upon proportionally. By looking through the lens of the media, I will also attempt to gauge the depth of knowledge the public is presumed to have when it comes to the phenomenon of geniuses. The question of whether or not these individuals in question are fairly and accurately portrayed also comes to head, which I will attempt to answer by analysing contemporary media programmes as standalone pieces, as well as by comparing them against one another. Another part of this exploration will be focused on the downside of having an extraordinarily high IQ. Based on the presumption that nothing is without a price, I will delve into personal and social cost of being a genius. The connection between deviancy and intellect has long been suspected, but until recent years, it has had a lacking representation as far as popular and contemporary media goes. To conclude this paper, I will present my own research on the matter. To gain a better understanding, as well as a clearer vision of the topic at hand, I have conducted a research primer ranging over six nations, including overseas cultures and countries. Said research focuses on developing a theory of how well informed residents of the Western-World are when it comes to intelligence and how the media helped them along to develop a fuller understanding of the matter.
