Absztrakt (kivonat)
Social media platforms in the current digital age have emerged as one of the major sources of information, especially among Generation Z (Gen Z) members. This has led to the problems regarding misinformation, which has become a global concern. This thesis investigates the relationship between media literacy, misinformation, and the usage of TikTok among Generation Z. It aims to understand Gen Z’s behavior on the TikTok platform, the challenges they face when distinguishing misinformation from factual information, and the role of media literacy skills when navigating through digital informative content. Using a mixed-method approach, the research combines survey data from 199 Gen Z members with in-depth interviews with selected TikTok users and a media specialist. The findings reveal that the main reasons for using TikTok were for entertainment, trends, and information, meeting the needs listed by the uses and gratifications theory. However, the unique algorithm of the platform and its addictive nature facilitated passive scrolling and reduced critical evaluation of content. Moreover, Gen Z’s ability to spot misinformation was inconsistent. Most were relatively confident, but few actually fact-checked the information they encountered on TikTok, and the emotionally resonant content or videos from “credible” creators made it difficult to draw the line between true and false information. Additionally, media literacy was crucial. People who were more educated and had more media literacy skills were critical and selective when encountering misinformation. However, younger members of Gen Z and less knowledgeable users were more vulnerable to it.With the analysis of both user behaviors and insights from a media expert, this thesis advances the understanding of digital media literacy and provides suggestions on how to improve critical media consumption abilities among Gen Z. Moreover, it identifies the inadequacy of current education and platform-based initiatives to counter misinformation, highlighting the importance of the collaboration of educators, platforms, and users themselves. In addition, this thesis provides a good basis for future research on the development of media literacy education, combating information disorders on TikTok, and exploring deeper into the relationship between Gen Z and TikTok.
