Absztrakt (kivonat)

With the continuous improvement of living standards and the upgrading of consumption structures, participation in sports activities has gradually evolved from a leisure choice to an important component of quality life. General Secretary Xi Jinping has pointed out that promoting high-quality development ultimately aims to enhance people's happiness and well-being. In this context, the expansion of sports participation not only reflects improved living conditions but also highlights a broader transformation in cultural and social demands. Sports activities have become an integral part of the pursuit of a healthy, active, and fulfilling lifestyle, illustrating the deepening integration of health consciousness into everyday life. However, empirical studies systematically examining the determinants of sports participation in China remain relatively scarce, especially ones that consider both individual and social factors. This study utilizes data from the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) to explore the key factors influencing residents' sports participation. By integrating Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory and social capital theory, the research constructs an analytical framework that investigates how personal income and the frequency of social activities impact sports engagement. Econometric methods, particularly generalized ordered logit regression models and mediation effect analysis, are employed to ensure the robustness of empirical findings. Furthermore, to address potential biases and ensure comprehensive analysis, the study incorporates control variables such as gender, marital status, employment condition, and regional characteristics. Additionally, the study conducts heterogeneity analysis to explore differences across various groups categorized by age and education level, providing a more nuanced understanding of the factors influencing different sub-populations. The results reveal that higher personal income, greater social activity engagement, higher educational attainment, and stronger perceptions of subjective social class significantly contribute to higher levels of sports participation. Individuals with higher incomes and more active social lives tend to engage more frequently in sports activities, reflecting both improved financial capabilities and greater social exposure. Moreover, disparities are observed between urban and rural residents, across regions, and among income groups. Urban residents, those living in economically developed regions, and individuals from middle- and high-income groups exhibit notably higher sports participation rates. Among different age groups, middle-aged and elderly individuals demonstrate a more significant relationship between income level and participation frequency, suggesting that economic security plays an even more critical role in encouraging sports engagement for older adults. Based on these findings, several policy recommendations are proposed. On the supply side, it is crucial to enhance public sports infrastructure, diversify sports programs, and improve the accessibility of sports facilities, particularly in underdeveloped regions and rural communities where opportunities are limited. Policymakers should focus on building inclusive spaces that cater to the needs of different age groups, genders, and income brackets. On the demand side, efforts should be made to foster a stronger sports culture, increase public awareness of the health and social benefits of sports, and reduce participation barriers related to cost, location, and information. Tailored campaigns that promote physical activity among disadvantaged groups could help close existing gaps. Furthermore, community-building initiatives and digital sports platforms should be promoted to expand participation opportunities for diverse demographic groups. Leveraging technology, such as online fitness classes and smart sports facilities, can make sports activities more accessible and attractive to younger generations. In conclusion, this study enriches the academic understanding of the socioeconomic determinants of sports participation and offers practical insights for policymakers aiming to promote national fitness and the sustainable development of the sports industry. By focusing on both structural conditions and individual motivations, the study highlights the necessity of creating a supportive environment that encourages sports participation across all segments of society. Ultimately, such efforts contribute not only to the enhancement of public health and well-being but also to the accumulation of social capital, fostering a more vibrant, connected, and resilient society.
