Absztrakt (kivonat)

This paper attempts to examine the communication in the Hungarian news reporting, influencer and NGO scene on sexual minority discourse within Hungary. It assumes a correlation between the media’s coverage of sexual minority discourse and public awareness on the topic, therefore concluding that the public discourse is likely to reflect the portrayal of the media. Thus, the paper argues that in order to elicit change in the perceptions of sexual minority issues the public needs to be activated to engage in said discourse, which can only be achieved with the help of the media. The specific question examined is: Does the media’s portrayal of LGBTQ+ events positively influence the public’s perception of sexual minorities? Only a small minority of studies examines the correlation between media and attitude towards sexual minorities, and therefore the field lacks pragmatic information on the topic. This research could contribute to the improvement of that. For the empirical research content analysis was used from a framing theory perspective. A variety of media content generated by a news portal, an influencer and an NGO operating in Hungary was analysed and interpreted within the topic of sexual minority discourse. A better understanding of the relations between communication and behavior was identified, specifically on the way in which communication about LGBTQ+ issues has an influence on the behavior of the public.
