Absztrakt (kivonat)
The purpose of this research is to find what are the main barriers that hinder Hungarian smalland medium sized companies in their internationalising. This research consists of secondaryand primary data. In the secondary research I reviewed all the relevant literatures and theoriessuch as the Uppsala model, stage theories and network approaches. I also analysed data fromstatistical institutions like KSH, Eurostat and MNB. These helped me to get a deeperunderstanding of internationalisation and with their help I built the theoretical framework formy thesis. The data collection method for my primary research consisted of interviews with HungarianSMEs that want to internationalise. After conducting the interviews, I assessed the data andanalysed it searching for barriers and patterns. I found that the most important barriers werelack of financial resources, lack of adequate information on the foreign countries and their lawsand regulations, high transportation costs and difficult paperwork. While the factors likelanguage barriers, tariffs, cultural differences, specifications of the product and other wereacknowledged they did not impact the interviewed companies that much, but it is important tomention them because in other cases these factors can also be important.SMEs play a vital role in the economy of the country; they create approximately 65% of thejobs and are responsible for 50% of the total yearly net turnover, exporting SMEs employ 18%of the Hungarian market. While there is huge potential in SMEs while internationalising theoften encounter these barriers that constrain them from expanding. Aiding and preserving theseSMEs is crucial for maintaining a healthy economy. However, without support and preparationmany SMEs are limited in their internationalisation. Providing governmental aid, trainingprogrammes, knowledge platforms and accessible funding are essential. In addition, SMEsneed to focus on creating and maintaining international connections as it is one of the factorsthat can seriously boost the internationalisation of a company, and they also need to focus ontheir strategies to overcome these challenges.
