Absztrakt (kivonat)

This thesis takes a closer look at how artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to reshape the way financial institutions manage risk. In today’s fast-moving financial world, banks and other financial organizations face growing challenges—from increasingly sophisticated fraud and cyberattacks to constantly changing regulations. Traditional risk management systems, which were once reliable, are now struggling to keep up. This has led many institutions to turn toward AI in search of smarter, faster, and more accurate solutions. The research explores how technologies like machine learning and natural language processing are being used in real financial settings to detect risk before it becomes a bigger problem. AI systems are now capable of processing huge amounts of data in seconds, spotting unusual behavior in real time, and even helping with tasks like credit assessments and regulatory compliance. These tools not only speed up decision-making but also improve its accuracy, allowing institutions to stay ahead of threats that would otherwise go unnoticed. But the thesis doesn’t stop at the advantages. It also digs deep into the challenges and ethical questions that come with using AI. What happens when the data used to train these systems is biased? Can we trust the results when we don’t fully understand how an AI model makes its decisions? And how can we ensure that AI is used in a way that’s fair, transparent, and responsible? These are just some of the important issues the study addresses. To understand the real-world impact of AI, the thesis takes a mixed-methods approach. It blends numbers and statistics with insights from case studies and expert perspectives. A major part of the research focuses on JPMorgan Chase, one of the global leaders in AI adoption in finance. The case study looks at how the bank uses AI tools like COiN (Contract Intelligence) to analyze legal documents and detect fraudulent transactions. It shows how AI can save time, reduce human error, and enhance overall efficiency—but also reveals the technical and organizational hurdles that come with implementing such advanced systems.Alongside this, the thesis also looks at how the industry is responding to concerns about AI by applying ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks. Concepts like the EU’s AI Act and responsible AI standards are discussed as ways to ensure that these powerful technologies are used safely and fairly. In the end, the study concludes that AI has incredible potential to improve how financial institutions manage risk—but it’s not a magic solution. The technology needs to be paired with strong ethical oversight, transparent processes, and constant human involvement. When done right, AI can help build a financial system that’s not just more efficient, but also more fair, secure, and trustworthy. This thesis encourages financial institutions to embrace innovation thoughtfully, seeing AI not just as a tool for profit, but as a key part of a smarter and more responsible future.
