This study investigates the role of international economic partnerships and structuraltransformation as pathways to sustainable growth in Ghana, using the African Continental FreeTrade Area (AfCFTA) as a case study. Ghana’s economic development has historically beencharacterized by a heavy reliance on primary commodity exports, limited industrial diversification, and periodic shifts in policy direction between protectionism and liberalization. The AfCFTA, asthe world’s largest free trade agreement by membership, presents a unique opportunity for Ghanato accelerate industrialization, enhance trade diversification, and foster regional integration. Theresearch adopts a qualitative methodology, gathering primary data through semi-structuredinterviews with key stakeholders, including policymakers, trade experts, and business leadersdirectly involved in AfCFTA implementation. Thematic analysis was employed to derive insightsfrom the interview data. The analysis reveals that stakeholders view the AfCFTA as a significantcatalyst for economic transformation, citing potential benefits such as increased intra-African trade, expanded market access, foreign investment attraction, and the facilitation of technology transferand capacity building. However, the findings also highlight persistent challenges that may hinderthe full realization of these benefits. Participants emphasized the need for coherent and consistentpolicy frameworks, targeted support for domestic enterprises, and strategic industrial upgrading toensure that Ghana can effectively leverage the AfCFTA for sustainable growth. The study furtherunderscores the importance of addressing non-tariff barriers, improving trade facilitation, andfostering public-private partnerships to maximize the developmental impact of internationaleconomic agreements. In conclusion, while the AfCFTA offers substantial opportunities for Ghanato achieve structural transformation and sustainable economic growth, realizing these gainsrequires deliberate policy action, institutional strengthening, and a long-term strategic vision.
