Absztrakt (kivonat)

The paper examines the most well-known Japanese anime production house, “Studio Ghibli”, an animation film by Miyazaki Hayao, who was born in pre-World War II Japan and was an environmentalist anime director. By interpreting semiotics in the three animations, My Neighbour Totoro (1998), Spirited Away (2001), and Howl's Moving Castle (2004), into three different concepts of Environmentalism, Western Consumerism, and Pacifism. Miyazaki's animations have won numerous awards, including the most prestigious Oscar award in 2003 for the best animated feature and for being suitable for audiences of all ages. This study used empirical qualitative research by conducting questionnaires and observing the semiotics approach to determine the audience's perception of the mundane storytelling films that illustrate the spectacular hand-drawn, colourful visuals and lively actors. Consequently, finding the message created to communicate with the viewers through these animated films reflects our real-life settings, which are the lessons and philosophy of Studio Ghibli's audiences. Keywords: Studio Ghibli, Japanese animation, Anime, Miyazaki, Environmentalism, Consumerism, Pacifism
