This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and its significant influence on the economic landscape of East Asia, specifically focusing on trade dynamics, investment flows, and policy adaptations from 2000 to 2019. The study meticulously examines the integration and strategic policies initiated by RCEP, which became fully operational by 2023, and underscores its role in fostering regional economic cooperation among 15 member states that collectively represent about 30% of the global population, economy, and trade volume. The research employs a robust blend of qualitative and quantitative methods to delve into the evolution of trade patterns, particularly highlighting the transition in China’s major trading relationships within the RCEP framework. Initially dominated by Japan and South Korea from 2000 to 2010, China’s trade focus shifted dramatically towards ASEAN countries between 2011 and 2019, with Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam emerging as key trading partners. This shift is significant, illustrating the dynamic nature of trade relationships and economic strategies within the region. The analysis further details changes in trade volumes and balances, noting a pivotal shift from persistent trade deficits with RCEP countries to a more nuanced pattern of surpluses and deficits. This change was particularly marked by an increase in trade surpluses with ASEAN countries, juxtaposed with expanding deficits with resource-rich countries like Australia, which were primarily driven by mineral exports. In examining the commodity-specific dynamics, the study observes that from 2000 to 2019, China’s exports were predominantly labor-intensive products classified under SITC6, SITC7, and SITC8 categories. However, there were noticeable shifts in the RCA indices, which signal evolving competitive advantages and adaptations in response to changing global market demands. Conversely, the exports from RCEP countries to China demonstrated significant complementarity, particularly in primary products and specific industrial manufactured goods, which effectively catered to the evolving needs of the Chinese market. Moreover, the research assesses the trade dependencies revealing a generally low dependencyof China on RCEP markets, with some notable exceptions, and an increasing dependency of RCEP countries on the Chinese market. This growing dependency reflects deeper economic ties and integration facilitated by RCEP, indicative of the significant impact RCEP has on regional trade dynamics. The factors influencing these evolving trade patterns were thoroughly analyzed, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Key factors include demographic shifts, geographic proximity, industrial complementarity between trade partners, trade frictions, and cultural differences. These elements collectively play crucial roles in shaping the bilateral trade developments and are pivotal in strategizing for future trade policies and economic cooperation. This comprehensive analysis illuminates the transformative impact of RCEP on the economic structures and trade architectures of East Asia. It provides critical insights for policymakers aimed at enhancing bilateral trade relations, leveraging economic complementarities, and optimizing regional economic strategies to fortify economic stability and foster sustainable growth amidst the complexities of global economic uncertainties. The findings underscore the importance of continuous policy innovation and collaborative economic strategies to sustain and amplify the benefits of economic integration under the RCEP framework.
