Absztrakt (kivonat)
This thesis critically examines the collapse of Credit Suisse, once Switzerland’s second-largest bank, to elucidate the complex interplay of factors that led to its failure and the subsequent acquisition by UBS. Drawing upon a detailed analysis of secondary data complemented by insights from primary interviews with two banking professionals and a Big4 Partner, this study provides a nuanced understanding of the internal and external dynamics that contributed to the bank’s demise. The research reveals that Credit Suisse’s collapse was primarily due to internal governance deficiencies and risky financial practices that were exacerbated by broader market and economic pressures. These included aggressive expansion, mismanagement of risk, and inadequate response to changing regulatory environments. The thesis identifies critical missteps, such as the bank's involvement in high-profile scandals ranging from tax evasion schemes to overly risky investment practices, which eroded investor and customer trust.Furthermore, the analysis delves into the response to the collapse, focusing on the immediate acquisition by UBS. While stabilizing the market in the short term, this move raised significant concerns about the implications for competition in the banking sector and the potential creation of a "too big to fail" institution. The study discusses the regulatory responses and the need for reforms to address systemic risks and enhance the resilience of financial institutions. The interviews provide firsthand insights into the perceptions and attitudes of industry insiders regarding the adequacy of the regulatory framework and the effectiveness of the crisis management measures implemented. In conclusion, this thesis argues that the fall of Credit Suisse serves as a critical case study for the financial sector, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced risk management practices and a more robust regulatory framework to prevent future crises. The lessons learned from this episode are vital for policymakers, regulatory bodies, and banking institutions aiming to safeguard against similar failures, ensuring the stability of the financial system in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
