This thesis explore relationship between China and Russia with special focus on their status during war in Ukraine. Discussing the deep history of their relationship, that is long and lasts for centuries already. It started in 16th century while Russia was expending to the east, China was its largest obstacle. Their conflict lasted for 19 centuries although through all that time those countries weren’t always enemies, sometimes they would be partners as well but the level of trust between those 2 countries has never been high. They were allies in fight against Japan and in WW2. During the Soviet Union, their relationships were difficult and differed on leaders in both countries. In that period, even though those two countries were major communistic powers, their view on communism and the world was significantly different. Outside of ideology, the three strongest disagreements were the Korean war, Taiwan and Tibet. After fall of Soviet Union in Russia came new times. Russia lost its position of one of 2 most powerful countries together with US and its economy was in collapse. Thanks to oil and gas export Russia grown its economy and started to progress. Its economic growth was mostly dependent on prices of fossil fuels as it was one of the largest exporters in the world. China had different path as it stayed communistic and started adopting some aspects of capitalism. It has had one of the largest economic growths in the world for almost 2 decades and become the second largest world economy just after USA. Russia’s economic growth slowdown in the second decade of 21st century due to the sanctions after occupation of Crimea and Covid crisis. In this period those countries become increasingly close and connected with common goal of challenging Western led world. They founded some international organizations together like Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS. They started investing in each other and due to close relations of President Xi JI Ping and President Putin they started developing friendly relationships. In 2022 Russia attacked Ukraine and conquered large parts of Eastern Ukraine, which caused Western countries to implement enormous sanctions on Russian federation. These sanctions didn't manage to stop war but west hoped they will damage Russian economic stability and ability to fight in war. Ukraine was supported by US and EU, that were trying to convince rest of world to implement sanctions on Russia, but with no results. The blow of sanctions for Russian economy was large as EU was Russia's largest economic partner. But thanks to China, India, Turkey and Arabic countries Russia managed to function normally. China becomes Russia's number one trading partner and number one investor in Russia. Russia managed to export most of gas and oil that was planned for Europe to China and India. It exports in China since start of war increased by abnormal amount, and Chinese export to Russia started to growth in fast pace. China is still careful with its export with Russia, not to cause any problems with EU, but it became obvious that Chinese export became crucial for Russian economy. Russia is becoming increasingly dependent on China and China is happy to enter on Russian market.
