Absztrakt (kivonat)
My research interest is related to traditions in general and folk dance in particular as a means of communication. My starting assumption is that the message and content communicated by folk dance in the state-socialist past, is highly different from what it communicates in today’s world, therefore, my interest is focused on revealing these changes in the message and content, with special regard to the similarities and differences that occur in the past and present communication. My research question is based on these suppositions: is folk dance still a communal reaction to the socio-historical and political environment, or does it express something else in the modern world? In the first part of my paper, I provide a literature overview on the known roots of folk dance, trying to point out the main turning points in the history of folk dance, with special attention to its social function in different historical periods. Arriving to nowadays’ situation, I compared it with the past times and examined whether can folk dance serve the same purpose as in the older times. As for my methodology, apart from analyzing and confronting the statements of the related theoretical and historical literature, I conducted four semi-structured professional interviews with folk dance experts and practitioners. This provided me with a real-life picture about the vision of today’s people who are related to this topic. They also varied in their age and gender, trying to get as diverse information as I could. The outcomes of my research will provide a better understanding of the contemporary processes of community building and identity search through the means of dance and creative activities.
