Absztrakt (kivonat)

This thesis delves into the intricate dynamics among government regulations, social media activism, and political polarization in Thailand, with a specific focus on the impact of hashtags such as #Abolish112 and #Save112 on Twitter. Employing Social Identity Theory (SIT), Media System Dependency Theory (MSD), and the lens of networked authoritarianism, the study conducts a content analysis of tweets associated with these hashtags to discern their influence on public sentiment and political discourse amidst the backdrop of stringent regulations, particularly lèse-majesté laws. The findings substantiate the hypothesis that the interplay between government regulations and social media activism significantly molds Thailand's political polarization landscape. The enforcement of lèse-majesté laws, while reinforcing existing political divisions, also serves as a catalyst for opposition sentiment, fueling a surge in online activism against these regulations. Moreover, the analysis underscores the intricate nature of this relationship, revealing a deepening entrenchment of individuals in their respective ideological positions. Despite growing discontent with the status quo, supporters of the monarchy are bolstered by the enforcement of regulations, thereby exacerbating societal divisions. This study provides valuable insights into the intricate dynamics among government regulations, social media activism, and political polarization in Thailand. While the findings reveal the dynamic nature of this relationship, the analysis of Twitter data unveils a growing dissatisfaction with the status quo, with many openly criticizing the monarchy and advocating for reform. By shedding light on these complexities, it contributes to a nuanced understanding of the evolving political landscape in the country.Key words: Political polarization, social media activism, lèse-majesté laws, Twitter analysis
