Abstract This study focuses on the conservation of the Namxong River in Vang Vieng District, Vientiane Province, through ecotourism practices. The study has three main objectives: firstly, to assess the tourism potential of the Namxong River; secondly, to evaluate the ecological impact of ecotourism on the Namxong River and its surroundings; and thirdly, to analyze strategies for biodiversity conservation along the Namxong River to ensure sustainable tourism. The research methodology employed in this study is qualitative, based on secondary data gathered from various sources including literature, publications, case studies, annual tourism reports (2010-present), and the National Tourism Administration. The findings of the study indicate that the Namxong River is the largest natural water source in Vang Vieng District, characterized by clean water and well-maintained ecological systems. The river offers diverse ecotourism activities along Namxong River such as tubbing (Long Kong Beng), kayaking, long-tail motorboats, zipline tour, swimming, rock climbing amidst limestone karsts, tour the cave and water cave as well as establishments like restaurants, hotels, resorts, and tourist attractions. Moreover, the Namxong River holds significant cultural importance for the local communities, serving as a source of food and a venue for traditional events such as boat racing and fire boat festivals. Ecotourism along the Namxong River has yielded positive impacts on the local economy, including increased employment opportunities and income generation. Socially, there has been infrastructural development and preservation of cultural traditions, benefiting both locals and tourists. Additionally, there is heightened environmental awareness, leading to legislative measures aimed at protecting the Namxong River ecosystem. However, negative impacts of ecotourism have also been observed, particularly in economic aspects such as inflated prices for water activities and accommodations. Furthermore, some entrepreneurs prioritize personal gains over environmental conservation, leading to issues like waste disposal and sewage release into the river. Socially, there are concerns regarding cultural changes and disturbances caused by tourism-related activities. Moreover, natural resources face degradation due to riverbank modifications and encroachments on protected areas. To ensure the sustainable conservation of the Namxong River for ecotourism, the government should implement specific policies and regulations. This includes delineating reserve, protected, and service areas, providing alternative livelihood opportunities to deter forest encroachment, enforcing strict penalties for violators of environmental laws, and promoting education and awareness campaigns. Ultimately, the emphasis should be on fostering ecotourism, nature-based tourism, and sustainable tourism practices along the Namxong River watershed.
