EXTRACT Name: Eszter Szalai Bachelor’s programme: International Business Economics Specialization: Foreign Trade Enterprises Title of thesis: Crowdfunding as an alternative form of financing: An analysis of the key factors contributing to success in reward-based crowdfunding on the UK’s largest crowdfunding platform The thesis starts by reviewing the main trends in the financial sector and the emergence of alternative finance. Alternative finance may have been previously considered as niche and unimportant by financial institutions, but what we can see now is continued growth, innovation and reach into the mainstream. The main part focuses on crowdfunding, which means investing in private companies by aggregating a large number of small investments from the crowds of people. It is making investing social and collaborative, serves as a good alternative to traditional funding methods. I provide an overview on the evolution of the concept, both non-financial and financial return crowdfunding models, corresponding legal framework, advantages and disadvantages of crowdfunding, market data and trends focusing on the UK. Statistics showed that only less than a third of crowdfunding campaigns reach their goal. In the final part, after choosing and analysing 10 recently ended business projects on UK’s largest platform, I came to a conclusion what sets apart a successful reward-based crowdfunding campaign from those that fail.
