Absztrakt (kivonat)
This research is a significant contribution to cross-cultural communication in higher education, focusing on Malaysia and Hungary, which have diverse cultural backgrounds. Effective communication in academia is vital for education quality, collaboration, and overall efficiency. However, cultural differences in communication are often overlooked. Malaysia's multicultural society and Hungary's homogenous culture offer a unique context for investigation. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring communication culture in these countries. It seeks to understand how hierarchy, authority, information-sharing, and academic traditions influence communication practices. This research intends to provide insights for promoting effective communication and optimizing work environments in both countries' higher education institutions. The research questions centre on hierarchy, authority, and cultural factors' role in shaping communication patterns in these contexts. As international education grows, these insights are crucial for fostering effective collaboration among diverse stakeholders. The findings have practical implications for university administrators and policymakers. Understanding cultural dimensions in communication can inform policies and practices to create more inclusive and globally-oriented communication cultures, enhancing decision-making and knowledge-sharing. On a global scale, this research contributes to the discourse on cross-cultural communication. It promotes mutual respect, learning, and sharing of best practices worldwide, essential in our interconnected world. Ultimately, it advances our understanding of communication culture, potentially leading to positive changes in higher education institutions and enriching the broader discussion on cross-cultural communication. This research aims to understand communication culture among university employees in Malaysia and Hungary, emphasizing the cultural factors and contextual nuances influencing communication within higher education institutions in these two countries. The study focuses on communication styles, hierarchy, authority, diversity in communication channels, and communication challenges in diverse cultural contexts. In terms of communication styles, Hungary predominantly adopts a formal and hierarchical approach, characterized by the use of proper titles and a preference for in-person interactions. Conversely, Malaysia embraces a more flexible style, combining formal and informal elements. Navigating these differences is vital for effective collaboration in the academic setting. The impact of hierarchy and authority is evident in both countries, with Hungary's hierarchical structure occasionally leading to one-way communication and hindering open discussions. In contrast, Malaysia values open discussion and mutual respect across hierarchical positions. Regarding diversity in communication channels, both nations rely on email for formal communication. However, Malaysia faces issues with delayed responses in this channel, prompting the utilization of online platforms, social media, WhatsApp, and face-to-face meetings to ensure efficient communication. The adaptability to various communication channels plays a crucial role in enhancing efficiency and collaboration. In the context of communication challenges within diverse cultural contexts, Hungary experiences a significant influence of cultural backgrounds on communication, necessitating vigilance and adaptability. Malaysia faces challenges when communicating with colleagues from less familiar backgrounds, highlighting opportunities for improvement. In summary, this research sheds light on the communication culture in Malaysia and Hungary, emphasizing the role of hierarchy, authority, communication styles, and adaptability to diverse communication channels. It also underscores the importance of navigating communication challenges within diverse cultural contexts, ultimately contributing to a more effective and inclusive communication culture in higher education institutions.
