Absztrakt (kivonat)

This research investigates the different approval rates of economic sanctions against the Russian government, companies and individuals among the countries covered by the Standard Eurobarometer 98 and Standard Eurobarometer 99 surveys. The choice of topic is based both on the topicality and salience of the war in Ukraine and on the concerns voiced by Member States about the harmful effects of sanctions. The research problem is framed by the argument that citizens in the countries surveyed have different rates of approval of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia. On the other hand, it is framed around the realist argument that unitary states fail to align with collective measures. Therefore, the research question is: "Why do approval rates of economic sanctions against the Russian government, companies, and individuals vary across the countries surveyed?" To uncover the differences, the research investigates dissatisfaction through a realist paradigm, more precisely through the concepts of classical realism, neorealism and neoclassical realism. To achieve this, the research employs regression analysis and investigates relative frequencies using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that the realist paradigm can provide an explanation for the dissatisfaction or concerns voiced by the countries surveyed. The selected indicators demonstrate that the concept of considering domestic factors, such as public opinion, has the highest explanatory value. Concepts centred around power endowments also provide a reliable understanding of the phenomena. The role of hegemons, threat balance, and political endowments provide explanations to a lesser extent.
