FROM TRADITION TO ATTRACTION: TURNING THE RED DAO HERBAL BATH INTO A TOURIST HOTSPOT In the 21st century, people are placing an increasing emphasis on maintaining good health. Health tourism is of particular importance globally and is also receiving attention because resources for health are limited which has an impact worldwide. As a local resident, it can be seen that there is a perception that the potential in Vietnam is not being fully exploited. An example of this is the Sa Pa herbal bath. A complex analysis has been undertaken to see if there is a need and among whom to promote the locally known potential more widely. At present it is mainly used by residents and passing visitors, or those who have heard of it by word of mouth, but commercial exploitation has not yet been achieved. The research is based on a traditional and unique herb-based spa attraction, examines the potential of a traditional spa tourism destination, describes the market, and analyses further potential market opportunities to match supply and demand. The study gathered various secondary sources to gain insights into Sa Pa's tourism landscape and the medicinal value of the Red Dao herbal bath and data from over 300 tourists in the form of a questionnaire survey. Additionally, interviews were conducted with different target groups for a better understanding of the demand. From the supply side, in-depth interviews were done with the Red Dao herbal bath business owners, from the Sapanapro Company and the Red Dao Community Cooperative both from Ta Phin, Sa Pa. Despite some limitations in data access and gaps in understanding the therapeutic properties of the herbal bath, the findings suggest that Sa Pa possesses significant potential for medical tourism due to its favourable climate, abundant natural resources, and traditional healthcare practices. However, challenges include limited awareness of the Red Dao herbal bath in the market and competition with other wellness tourism offerings. The study proposes a multifaceted approach to address these challenges. Key recommendations include improving the quality of services, increasing promotional efforts, developing and preserving traditional medicinal plants, enhancing community engagement, and pursuing the registration of the Red Dao herbal bath as a recognized medical treatment and patent by the Ministry of Health. These initiatives aim to position Sa Pa as a prominent medical tourism destination in the future, contributing to regional economic development and the well-being of both tourists and the local community.
