Absztrakt (kivonat)

My research focuses on the communication of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the Israeli film serial Fauda that was first aired in 2015. This serial which brought a world-wide recognition to its creators, is rather unique as it approaches the conflict from both Israeli and the Palestinian perspective and was created by Israeli writers of both ethnic communities. Throughout this series, I will interpret the message that the series intend to communicate through the means of cinematography and investigate if artistic communication has the potential to provide a balanced and unbiased approach to this most burning issue. In my paper I give a content analysis of the series Fauda as well as to provide an overview of the reception of the film by Israelis, Palestinians, and neutral audience. In this regard my research question can be formulated as follows: can a film serial like Fauda bring closer the standpoints in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and if yes what are the messages communicated which have this potential. In the first part of my work, I will provide a brief literature review about the history of the conflict, and tackle some issues about the population in Israel, the Middle Eastern culture which are necessary for understanding the background of Fauda from the perspective of the Jewish and the Palestinian/Arab side as well as from the perspective of the rest of the world. As an Israeli citizen committed to the idea of peaceful cohabitation of the two nations I cannot deny my emotional involvement in the topic however, even in these critical times, I try to represent an unbiased-humanist position and keep equal distance from both sides. Methodologically wise I choose to analyze the topic with a content analysis method because it can give me a better insight and understanding of the sides and arguments in the conflict. Examining the content of Fauda and getting to the core of the series I try to distill the message of the series and connect it to the values it communicates. What exactly happens in the series and what can we learn about the culture of the conflict in the Middle East through Fauda. The outcome of my research will give another point of view of the conflict from the perspective of the Middle Eastern culture and also give a different perspective on the situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – including some ideas for reconciliation with the help of the artistic communication – for example, thorough a popular serial like Fauda, that had a different approach that may reach out to many people in the Arabic world.
