Absztrakt (kivonat)

This thesis paper investigates the complicated issue of young unemployment in Nigeria while questioning the strongly ingrained assumption that Nigerian youths are lazy. The topic of youth unemployment is a major worry in the country, compounded by a slew of economic, social, and political variables. The prevalent narrative, which frequently links high youth unemployment rates on perceived laziness and/or lack of ambition among Nigerian youths, merits a thorough analysis. This paper takes a comprehensive approach, first studying the historical backdrop of youth unemployment in Nigeria, charting the growth of its causes and implications across time. We dive into the economic issues, insufficient educational systems, and limited career prospects that contribute to the problem, providing a detailed grasp of the core causes. Furthermore, we examine the role of government policies and programmes aimed at addressing youth unemployment, assessing their success and room for improvement. The study also investigates the Nigerians in diaspora in order to challenge laziness stereotype. The following research questions were sought to be answered stated below: a. To what extent does Nigeria's youth unemployment rate correspond to the stereotype of laziness of Nigerian youth, and what are the underlying factors leading to this unemployment? b. How do economic and educational factors and labour market conditions affect the employability and goals of Nigerian youth, and how might these aspects contradict the youth population's notion of laziness? c. What role has government policies played in resolving youth unemployment in Nigeria, especially youth empowerment programmes and economic initiatives, and what obstacles and opportunities do these policies bring in combating the stereotype of laziness? d. Is there a systemic difficulty or barriers that prevents Nigerian youth from gaining access to education and employment opportunities? In essence, this thesis paper tries to give a nuanced perspective on young unemployment in Nigeria, disputing the stereotype that Nigerian youths are indolent. The paper hopes to generate a better-informed dialogue and stimulate the development of comprehensive approaches to this urgent problem by identifying the systemic causes that underpin teenage unemployment. Finally, the study emphasises the importance of a combined effort between the government, commercial sector, and civil society to offer opportunities for Nigerian young, allowing them to realise their full potential and contribute to the growth of the nation.
