Abstract

AN ODESSAY OF YUGOSLAVIAN IDEOLOGY: EMIR KUSTURICAS’ CINEMATIC COMMUNICATION Mila Bozic and Osaid Al Mbaidin Faculty of International Business and Management Supervisor: Dr. Krasztev Péter The research investigates how cinematic language communicates and depicts reality through narratives and fiction, specifically focusing on the former Yugoslavia and its state socialist regime. The research concentrates on selected films directed by the famous Yugoslav director Emir Kusturica, thus answering the question of how he utilizes the interplay of cinematography, symbolisms, music, and storytelling to depict the mayhem state of Yugoslavia and its evolving image, and what broader thematic, social, historical, and cultural messages do his movies communicate. The paper provides an overview of the historical background, as well as points to some historical preludes dating back to the kingdom of South Slavs. The literature review explores current theories and research in the field of filmmaking, in order to understand the potency of cinematic language in portraying a recurring image to communicate with the audience. In terms of methodology, we conducted a comprehensive content analysis of three movies as case studies since it serves the purpose of the research paper especially because they cover various cultural and historical phases of Yugoslavia. The deeper analysis of the movies, beginning with a synopsis of the plot to get the essence of what is expected thus connecting them to reality, goes through each of the cinematic tools, explaining them through key scenes, and relating to the theories mentioned before to comprehend entirely. Moreover, the investigation intends to acquire additional knowledge by conducting a comparative analysis with the Danish film movement Dogme 95, to identify similarities and distinctions between the selected criteria mentioned previously, explaining how those approaches contribute to the representation of cultural and emotional communication. The outcome of the research is set to acquire a better comprehension of cinematic language tools, their usage, and how can a filmmaker communicate his creative visions while also including sensitive topics about the nation and national identity.
