Abstract
The focus on this research is evaluating the sustainable development of the tourism industry of Jordan through the involvement of the local community in cultural heritage preservation. Therefore, two research questions were developed: How effective are the efforts of various actors in safeguarding cultural heritage through the engagement of local communities in Jordan? To what extent has tourism advancement in Jordan led to conflict within the community, created barriers for sustainable cultural tourism and how is it being resolved? The local community play a huge role in the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and are necessary for the creation of authentic touristic experiences. Local engagement in tourism is a method of sustainable development that has been used successfully in other countries, but Jordan has yet to fully integrate locals in tourism development. Therefore, this research paper plans to address the need for and importance of local engagement in cultural heritage preservation and sustainable cultural tourism. The research will be conducted through the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods, including a focus group of domestic and international tourists on a trip to provide insight into the perspective of tourists on the tourism attractions and cultural heritage of Jordan. As well as field research through participating in tour of a lesser-known area rural area in Jordan. To answer RQ1, an interview with the founder of a social enterprise focusing on the local community in rural areas in Jordan was conducted, as it would show the efforts taken by non-state actors in safeguarding cultural heritage. The second interview is with a successful local who developed her touristic attraction through traditional culinary and agricultural practices, as her success will help provide basis for the success of others. The results of the research show that there has been failure to safeguard cultural heritage and further involvement of the local community is necessary. Funding and support from the government is also key to continued and widespread growth of local communities in rural areas, as the help and support from non-for-profit organizations and social enterprises is limited. Whereas foreign aid tends not be used effectively due to a lack of knowledge of where the funds need to be used to offer the most support. However, recent years have shown examples of successful projects, which shows with the correct and effective support both locals and tourists can benefit.
