Abstract
This paper examines the complicated intricacies of the relationship between South Korea and China after the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense ballistic missile system deployment. The two countries have a long, common history, with notable events like the Korean War, when they stood on different sides, yet after decades of navigating on those clear lines of alliances, they began normalizing their diplomatic relationships and engaging in economic activities. This booming trade partnership was briefly disturbed by the deployment of the THAAD system in South Korea, which created a new wave of enmity between the two nations. China, to deter South Korea from the deployment, carried out retaliatory economic sanctions that left a long-lasting strain on the diplomatic, economic and cultural areas of their relationship. I will inspect the asymmetric economic interdependence between South Korea and China, to show the vulnerability of South Korea to such sanctions and how, despite being the ally of the United States, South Korea cannot entirely turn away from China due to the intertwined state of their economies. At the end, I will look into possible routes reconciling the broken diplomatic ties between them.
