AbstractIn the evolving landscape of international relations, soft power competition has emerged as a critical dimension of global diplomacy. This research explores soft power dynamics in Africa, a continent experiencing heightened engagement from major global powers due to its economic potential, cultural diversity, and geopolitical significance. The study primarily focuses on the competition between two influential actors, the United States and China, as they vie for influence on the African continent. This study hypothesizes that the United States and China employ distinct soft power strategies in Africa, with the United States leaning towards cultural diplomacy and educational exchanges, and China emphasizing infrastructure development and economic partnerships. Furthermore, this research explores the variance in effectiveness of these soft power strategies across African regions, shaped by historical ties, cultural affinities, and economic interests.Employing a qualitative comparative analysis, this research utilizes a variety of primary and secondary data sources, including government reports, media analysis, and public opinion surveys. The focus is on regional case studies, particularly in Nigeria, to provide detailed insights into the interactions between the United States, China, and African nations in the realm of soft power influence. Each case study aims to explore the strategies used by the United States and China in their dealings with African nations, shedding light on their respective soft power approaches and impacts, and contributing to the academic discussion in international relations. The expected findings aim to elucidate the intricate dynamics of soft power competition in Africa, illuminating the multifaceted strategies employed by the United States and China. Ultimately, this study seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of how major global powers engage with African nations and the implications of soft power competition for both Africa and the broader field of international relations.
