Absztrakt (kivonat)
This thesis project paper about “How smart technologies can be implemented and provide sustainable solutions in one of the Malaysian island – Pulau Tioman smart island concept”. I chose this topic because during my studies in the Tourism Management master course at the Budapest Business University (BGE), I had an opportunity to study in the Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) as an exchange student within the framework of the OBIC and the Erasmus Exchange Mobility Program.Since this was my last study year at the Budapest Business University (BGE), I also chose this destination for the purpose of presenting the ecotourism of Malaysia as part of my thesis topic. During my stay in Malaysia I had a chance to travel around within the country to visit breathtaking landscapes and places. I characterize myself as an „Island lover” and I am interested in digitalization, smart tourism, E-tourism and sustainable way of living by using smart technology tools in this modern World. My purpose was to combine my exchange opportunity with my interests to write about as my thesis project. However, I learnt more about new tourism perspectives, subjects but about the Malaysian culture, religion and lifestyle as well.I highly recommend to visit Malaysia, the ’truly Asia’. Malaysia is a safe and trusted travel destination among the tourists from all around the world. The tourist visitor number was three million in 2020. Mainly the tourists come from Central Asia, West Asia, Oceania, Africa and from Western-Europe. Malaysia is a good destination for families, younger or for older generations and for retirement purposes. Based on the Tourism Malaysia strategic plan report, 1.8 million excursionists arrived in Malaysia in 2020 and the 30.1% of the visit were holiday, leisure and relaxation purposes. Malaysia is titled as the „Top of the Mind Ecotourism Destination of the World” and the Tourism Malaysia slogan which based on true fact is „Malaysia truly Asia”. Tourism Malaysia’s new strategic plan and vision is to use the digitalization and smart technology tools, smart partnerships in the tourism industry and focus more on eco-tourism and sustainability as creating more personalized eco-packages, catering for smaller groups of tourists and offering nature – based activities. Nevertheless, move away from mass tourism and focus on niche areas (special interest tourism) like island and coastal eco tourism. Ecotourism and sustainability plays an increasingly important role in the Malaysian tourism, including the island tourism which is a special interest tourism. In my thesis, I would like to present the Tourism Malaysia strategic plans which combines the preservation of nature on the islands and how the smart tourism technology tools can play an important role and be an opportunity to build a more eco-friendly island destination in Malaysia. In my thesis, I would like to present the Malaysian ecotourism and its smart tourism combination in the islands as a tourism product from its theoretical approach to the characteristics of Malaysia through demand and supply characteristics. Based on my research and data information which I have collected and processed that Malaysia is moving away from mass tourism and moving towards more flexible, experimental and individualistic trips. Island or ecotourism is a niche area of the special interest tourism which means to conserve the nature, make sustainable strategies to enjoy but explore the islands, using environmentally – friendly materials, support small and medium sized local businesses, organize activity based trips and experiential tourism where the nature, adventure, rural destinations and island / coastal tourism meets.
