Absztrakt (kivonat)
This thesis was written with the aim of studying the grain market in Hungary. Throughout the thesis, I examined this market from various perspectives. Primarily, I investigated the importance of Hungarian grain in the global market. In this section, I highlighted the excellent quality of Hungarian grain, favorable growing conditions, grain prices, the significance of Hungarian grain in the foreign trade market, Hungary's geopolitical situation, and the importance of source diversification. However, 2022 and 2023 were two critical years for Hungarian grain cultivation, bringing unprecedented changes and challenges, affecting both production and export. The main objective of my thesis is to analyze these two critical years. To study the grain market, I used various sources to first paint a picture of Hungary's grain cultivation and export and examined grain cultivation in the European Union. Additionally, I investigated the global grain market situation. After gaining a comprehensive understanding of how the grain market operates, I delved into the functioning of the Hungarian grain export market, which was completely reshaped by the two extreme years. The first extreme factor that transformed Hungary's grain cultivation was the massive drought in 2022. The nearly precipitation-free year significantly reduced the wheat yield and almost completely destroyed the corn yield in Hungary. This was followed by the Russian-Ukrainian war, which reshaped the global grain market. The influx of cheap Ukrainian grain into Hungary made it impossible for farmers to sell their produce. In relation to these two extreme years, I conducted an interview with a local farmer, Mihály Molnár who holds a degree in agricultural engineering and currently owns 60 hectares of land, where he mainly cultivates wheat and maize. This interview provided answers to many of my questions on this topic. The interview also helped me better understand the difficult situation faced by farmers during this period.
