My thesis conducts a comprehensive analysis of the profound repercussions of war on the Russian economy and its attendant market dynamics. My study is structured around several pivotal themes, each contributing to a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted economic challenges faced in the wake of conflict. Beginning with a meticulous assessment of various sectors within the Russian economy, my thesis establishes a baseline by examining pre-war conditions. This encompasses a detailed analysis of the industrial, agricultural, and service sectors, illuminating areas most susceptible to shifts brought about by hostilities. Additionally, a thorough investigation of labor market dynamics provides critical insights into the societal impact of economic fluctuations. Turning to the financial domain, the study scrutinizes the formidable pressures exerted on the financial system by sanctions. Origin and nature of sanctions are traced, leading to an in-depth exploration of their impacts on the stability and functioning of financial institutions. Responses, including asset freezes and capital flight, are analysed alongside policy measures deployed to mitigate these challenges. Macroeconomic challenges arising from this economic turbulence are also addressed. Inflationary pressures, exchange rate volatility, and fiscal policy strains are examined in detail. Additionally, my thesis investigates the effectiveness of adjustments in monetary policies in stabilizing the economy amidst disruptive forces. My study delves into the dynamics of international trade, focusing on shifts in Russian exports post the Ukrainian War. Implications on key export sectors and efforts to diversify market reach in response to altered geopolitical realities are thoroughly assessed. Furthermore, the growing interdependence between Russia and China is examined, encompassing strengthened economic relations, evolving trade dynamics, and associated prospects and risks. The burgeoning role of Turkey in the economic landscape is also a focal point. An exploration of the emerging economic partnership, bilateral trade flows, and strategic implications stemming from this evolving relationship is conducted. Lastly, my thesis discerns shifts in economic cooperation between Russia and European countries, both pre and post the initiation of the special military operation. By dissecting pre-war cooperation agreements and analyzing the impact of the conflict on economic ties, the evolving nature of these relationships is elucidated. Through these comprehensive analyses, this thesis provides a robust cost analysis of the war's impact on the Russian economy and market. The findings enhance understanding of conflict's economic effects, provide policymakers with helpful advice, and establish the framework for future study in this important topic.
