Absztrakt (kivonat)

Hispanics, as the largest ethnic minority group in the United States, have a great influence on how the future of the United States of America will be like from a social and economic aspect. Even though several steps have been taken in order to make Hispanics catch up with other racial and ethnic population groups, they are still lagging behind in economic, educational and healthcare terms, among others. Given the fast pace population growth that was experienced for Hispanics in the recent years and the expected growth in the coming decades, it is essential to focus more on this population group. After analyzing the current numbers and statistics about the Latino population in the United States, broken down to the details of the largest sub-groups, Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans and Puerto Rican Americans, we can conclude that well-organized government actions are needed. In order to provide for future generations, further educational reforms need to be implemented. Even though college enrollment figures for Latino youth grows substantially year by year, drop-out rates are still much higher than for other ethnic and racial groups. The Affordable Care Act was a great step ahead to provide health care services for those who cannot afford to have a health insurance, many Hispanics still do not have access to these services. It is not only the U.S. government who needs to take some steps in order to better integrate the Hispanic population group. The U.S. society in general also has to promote social integration, and based on Pew Research Center data, there is still a great share in the American society, more than one-third, which says immigration to the United States is, and has been, a change for the worse. Although intermarriage rates are on the rise, still 10% of the American public says these marriages make the society worse. To summarize, in order to fully integrate this growing population group in the American society, social acceptance will be definitely essential. The integration measures that the federal government has initiated still need to be further developed. If the United States wants to meet President Obama’s ambitious goals regarding the nation’s future, the issues in integrating Hispanics must be addressed immediately, as the success of Latinos in education is of long-term importance to America’s society and economy.
