Absztrakt (kivonat)
The transportation sector is a significant contributor to globalgreenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. To mitigate these impacts, theglobal automotive industry has been transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs)that are powered by electricity from batteries rather than fossil fuels. Whileelectric cars have been touted as a sustainable alternative to conventionalcars, the extent of their sustainability in the long term is still a topic ofdebate. The aim of this thesis is to examine the economic and social impacts ofelectric cars and assess whether they are more sustainable in the long termthan conventional cars. Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of thepresent without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirown needs (WCED, 1987). To assess the sustainability of electric cars, thethesis will analyze various economic and social factors such as cost, energyefficiency, environmental impact, and user acceptance.Several studies have analyzed the economic aspects of electric cars andhave found that while electric cars have a higher upfront cost, they have alower total cost of ownership over their lifetime compared to conventional cars(Fleiter et al., 2018; De Kleine, 2019). This is because electric cars havelower fuel and maintenance costs, and the cost of batteries is decreasingrapidly (Fleiter et al., 2018). On the other hand, the social acceptance ofelectric cars has been identified as a key barrier to their widespread adoption(Sierzchula et al., 2014). This is because consumers perceive electric cars tohave limited driving range, long charging times, and a lack of charginginfrastructure (Sierzchula et al., 2014).Furthermore, the environmental impacts of electric cars are also a keyconsideration in assessing their sustainability. While electric cars producezero tailpipe emissions, the environmental impact of their production anddisposal must also be taken into account (Ellingsen et al., 2018). Therefore, the thesis will also analyze the environmental impacts of electric carscompared to conventional cars.In conclusion, this thesis will investigate the economic and socialimpacts of electric cars and assess their sustainability in the long term. By examiningvarious economic and social factors and analyzing the environmental impacts ofelectric cars, the thesis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of thesustainability of electric cars and contribute to the ongoing discussion on thetransition to a low-carbon transportation system.
