Absztrakt (kivonat)

Due to the fact that from the 19th centurytill the present day, the development of technology has increased thecomplexity of international trade in comparison to the earlier periods. Thus, trade has undergone a transformation, leading to a decline in the associatedand various forms of trade. Afterward, the concept of Global Value Chains (GVCs)has been introduced in many regions. GVCs refer to the process of producinggoods or services through a wide range of activities across differentcountries. According to a number of research, the GVC's effect on the economyprovides greater advantages than drawbacks. This piques my interest in doingresearch on the subject in the context of my home country, the Lao People'sDemocratic Republic (Lao PDR), which is now classified as the group of the LeastDeveloped Countries (LDC). This research paper will focus on GVCsin theLao PDR such as the current situation of GVCs in Lao PDR, the influences ofGVCs on the Lao economy, and GVCs in the development framework since Lao PDR isa developing country. In particular, the research will focus on theagricultural sector with the most potential in the Lao PDR. Furthermore, there'sa case study of a chosen company from the agriculture sector, suchas the Dao Heuang Group, in order to go further into the topic. In the thesis paper, the author applies a mixedmethodology containing both quantitative and qualitative approaches whichallowfor more insight into the topic. Furthermore, both primary and secondarysources of data are used in the research. On the basis of the result, Lao PDRwas involvedin the Regional Value Chains more than GVCs and its placed in the upstream positionand forward linkagebecause the proportion of DVA is higher than FVA.Also, theprimary and low-technology manufacturing sectors in Laos are thesectors that have the largest comparative advantage, as determined by RCA'scalculations. So the sector that should participate in GVC are mainly theprimary sector such as agriculture products: paddies, cassava, coffee, maize…Coffeeis one of the prioritized products because it can join the GVCs as rawingredients and beverages as high return. In conclusion, Laos still has a lot of challenges inGVCs participation. Fortunately, the Lao PDRhas a wealth of naturalresources and a high potential for agriculture sectors, which can influence agreater proportion of GVC participation. Especially, if the raw products can befurther processed locally.
