Absztrakt (kivonat)

The research will test the hypothesis that the United Kingdom’s conflicts in sovereignty has greatly contributed to their exit from the European Union. As both Brexit and sovereignty requires a complex analysis, the author has conducted an extensive content analysis to evaluate how the United Kingdom’s sovereignty has been affected by the European integrational phases or other external factors. In order to narrow down the perspective of the study, the author has defined four dimensions of sovereignty that has been analysed.
It is a world economic theory analysis which accounts for the different push and pull factors from 1950 to 2020. This means that the thesis will not only explore the EU’s interaction, but its predecessors’ as well, such as the European Coal and Steel Community, the European Economic Community. However, the research has shown that not only the EU itself, but the North Atlantic relationship, especially with the US also greatly contributed to the decision making of the British Parliament. Just as the decolonization, the study will evaluate how Britain has reached a point of exiting the union.
The result of the research has shown that the different aspects of sovereignty has been affected one way or another by its international relationships. In contrary to the EU’s aspirations to influence Britain’s relationship with the continent positively, the research found that most of the times it resulted in negative impacts on the long run. The exact effects and results are showcased in the research’s synthesis and conclusion, and the research provides evidence that the loss of sovereignty was indeed one of the greatest contributing factors for Brexit’s realisation.
