It refers to the next step of “sustainable tourism” - meaning that besides sustaining and minimising the adverse impact on culture, society and economy, stakeholders should create more net positive value by practical actions (Heslinga, 2022). However, this field remains an uncharted territory in Vietnam. Among the tourist attractions in Vietnam, Sapa is a wonderful destination consisting of natural mountainous resources and diverse cultural resources that not only attracts domestic tourists but also piques the curiosity among international visitors. However, it has been damaged significantly due to the lack of responsibility from stakeholders, resulting in environmental pollution, traffic congestion, erosion of local culture, low levels of awareness and education, misleading image of Sapa, street vendor harassing tourists, children leaving school to sell products on the street, overreliance on tourism in the event of pandemic, overusing tourism for temporary benefits, and unfairness for disadvantaged local people. Therefore, this research is conducted with a view to providing knowledge on “ regenerative tourism”, especially its benefits to both locals and visitors; contributing more insights into the current tourism situation of Sapa; exploring the consciousness of stakeholders (host, tourists, authorities) in terms of regenerative tourism towards the environment, culture and destination at large (from taking personal responsibility for their actions); pointing out the challenges that impede the development of regenerative tourism in Sapa; and proposing recommendation for the destination.
