Absztrakt (kivonat)

Mythesis is about comparing cultural and creative industries, focusing on themovie industries in Korea and in the United States of America. I have analyzed the industries, their model, their marketing strategies and the consumers’behavior.Theaim of my dissertation was to present and understand how the industries and theconsumers' approach to movies from the different industries vary.Mayapproach to this research was to firstly dive into the history and the culturalaspect of both industries, so I could understand thoroughly the consumers' decisionsand behavior. After that I analyzed the data I could collect from literature, previousstudies and research, and data on the movies’ performances both on the marketand on a financial level. I have also examined factors influencing the revenueof movies and how these factors differ in the two industries. In my study I used, for example, Pearson correlation and regression analysis to examine therelationship between budget, and box office performance, genre, year ofrelease, and ratings. The results show that budget has a significant role in amovie's success in both industries. However, the movies' genre does not have asignificant explanatory value.Thelimitations of my research were the difference in the amount of data I couldfind on the Hollywood and Korean film industries. The amount of data I workedwith was enough, but from more I could’ve concluded further research and Icould’ve drawn additional conclusions.Mystudy concludes that South Korean moviegoers prefer homegrown films as long asthey are high quality, well-marketed, and do not compete with Hollywood actionfilms that have a sizable international fan following. While inHollywood the interest for movies made in foreign countries still lacks.
