Absztrakt (kivonat)

Mandalika, located next door to a famous tourist destination of Bali is chosen as one of the New Bali, a project to prepare five destinations in Indonesia to be the new Bali as an effort to overcome sustainability issue happening in the Island. In order to prepare Mandalika as a more sustainable New Bali, it is crucial to make sure that its tourism development is adhere to the sustainability concept. This study discussed and evaluated how the Mandalika Project (a mega tourism project) and Village Tourism as a form of community-based tourism (CBT) are applied in the destination and affecting its tourism sustainability. The triple bottom line (TBL) framework is used to evaluate the impact of mega project to the destination sustainability. Meanwhile, evaluation of Tourism Village in Mandalika is conducted by looking at how the concept of community participation is stated and encouraged by the government within the policy document, and by analyzing actions taken by the locals within Tourism Villages in Mandalika. To evaluate the actions taken, a comparative study between a good and bad case village are performed. A multi-method approach consisted of online in-depth interview, online observations, and netnography are used in this study to complement the secondary data. The result shows that the impact of Mandalika Project to the destination is still far from sustainable. True, the amount of investment brought to the island has benefited the destination, particularly in terms of business viability, employment, and the provision of supporting infrastructure. However, this advantage is viewed unequally dispersed, especially for the local community that has nothing to do with tourism. Meanwhile, for the Tourism Village, we learn two things. First is that the policy document related to Tourism Village has encouraged community participation in theory. However, many flaws exist in practice, particularly with regard to the protection of community rights. Second is that an active community participation is the key to a successful Tourism Village, especially in a destination which the government is not actively involved in the development like Mandalika.
