Absztrakt (kivonat)

The early 1990s are characterized by the violent disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. By examining the history of all the many Slavic groups that made up the racially varied nation, the thesis looks at the possible causes of the chaotic breakup of the country. From the very settlements of the Slavs throughout their independent tribal histories and development of national identities, all the way until their union under the same borders, the argument focuses on the nationalism and historical animosities that are the most frequently cited reasons for the breakup. The severest conflicts were between the Croats & Serbs, which were made even stronger by the atrocities of World War II and the subsequent communist regime, which never really solved the nationalistic issues but swept them under the rug. From the founding of the first Yugoslav nation in 1918 until the start of the horrific conflict that caused the country to break apart in 1991, tensions between the various ethnic groups constantly persisted.
