Absztrakt (kivonat)

For the topic of my thesis, I chose to investigate the potential effects of boycotts on the investment decisions of investors through their impact on ESG (Environmental Social Governance) scores. ESG is a popular term today as responsible investing gained popularity, and ESG factors are included as part of the investors' decision-making process. I wanted to connect ethical investing with boycotts, because many investors and boycotters are similar in a way, that they feel it is their duty to hold corporations accountable for their social, environmental, governance impact. The research is secondary, I used both qualitative and quantitative data from articles, official statistical websites, reports, publications, and the MSCI scoring system. The research contains two case studies of ESG controversies. I compared Volkswagen and BP regarding the controversies’ impact on their ESG and ESG controversy scores, share prices, impact on their peers, operating income, revenues, whether they were boycotted, and their PR strategy after the controversy. I found that apart from the fact that BP was boycotted and Volkswagen was not, they went through similar phases.I elaborated the final conclusion by finding answers to four questions that arose. Whether boycotts could affect a company’s revenue, share price and decisions of investors; whether ESG could have a significant importance for investors; whether boycotts could influence ESG scores; and whether ESG controversy scores could have importance for investors. Researching along these questions helped to draw the final conclusion, that while a boycott could be a great tool to send a message to the shareholders of a company about an improper governance and influence stock prices that way, in case of an enormous ESG controversy barely does it matter. Shareholders would react and stock prices would fall because of the initial ESG problem and their consequences, regardless of a boycott.
