Absztrakt (kivonat)

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented on the hospitality and tourism industries around the world. While a number of academic literatures have examined the current and future management strategies to restart tourism and hospitality in Europe, there has been little discussion about Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), particularly about its major cities with similar characteristics. This study focuses on Budapest, and its competitors, Vienna, Bratislava, Prague, and Kraków. A quantitative statical analysis of datasets provided by Smith Travel Research (STR) was conducted on the selected markets during various timescales, from pre-COVID and during COVID periods to the future after the pandemic. The research explores how the CEE region, - particularly Budapest-based hotels, - responded to the new situation and performed amid the outbreaks, as well as strategizes for the future to restart hotel operation and rebuild hospitality. It is expected that all cities were impacted negatively during COVID and had various unprecedented changes in operational strategies, supply, demand, and key performance indicators. The strategy for rebuilding hospitality in CEE regions is to invest in technologies that streamline operations, provide personalized travel experiences, sustain enhanced hygiene measures, and overcome labour shortages. The results reveal that hotel performance indicators were significantly dropped during the pandemic and hoteliers quickly implemented operational changes to adjust to the circumstances. Additionally, data analysis plays an important role in defining management strategies and trends of hospitality recovery in CEE area, specifically in the Budapest market.
